what changes in Catalonia
Catalonia is one of the regions that makes most use of its tax powers. A Barcelona company or self-employed professional pays Corporate Tax and VAT just like in the rest of Spain, but regional taxes and some Catalan taxes change the numbers a lot.
Reliefs that depend on the case
Spouses get a 99% relief, but children over 21 get a decreasing relief that falls as the inheritance grows. The main home and family business reductions are key to paying less.
No general relief
Catalonia applies Wealth Tax with a tax-free allowance of €500,000. Shareholders and business owners should check whether their shares meet the requirements for the family business exemption.
ITP from 10%
Buying second-hand property in Catalonia is taxed from 10%, with higher rates for higher-value bands. It should be factored in when calculating the real cost of premises, an office or a warehouse.
Tourist stay tax
If you run tourist accommodation or holiday homes, you must charge and declare the tax on stays in tourist establishments, which in Barcelona also includes a municipal surcharge.
